Learn about Sperm: Take this Short Male Infertility Quiz

Dr. Dan Gehlbach knows the male reproductive tract. As a reproductive endocrinologist in Olathe, Kansas, Dr. Gehlbach sees men and women having trouble getting pregnant. Half the time, infertility is caused by male factors, so Dr. Gehlbach will recommend semen analysis.

Most people don’t think about the inner workings of their reproductive organs, but if you are trying to get pregnant, or experiencing infertility, you might want to test your knowledge.

Sperm facts: true or false?

1. Men produce 15 million sperm each time they ejaculate.

False, the average number is 70 million, but it takes just one to fertilize an egg. That’s why the revolutionary male fertility treatment called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is so effective in helping men with low sperm counts become fathers.

2. If you don’t produce sperm, you will require surgery.

False. In some cases, men with a low sperm count can try in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and ICSI. After semen analysis, Dr. Gehlbach will refer some cases to a urologist for specialized fertility surgeries called MESA and TESE.

3. A fertility drug can help men increase sperm counts.

True. Recent findings confirm that the time-tested fertility drug clomiphene citrate (Clomid) helps increase sperm counts in men.
