The governing organization for fertility clinics in the United States released its report for babies born in 2012 as a result of in vitro fertilization. Midwest Reproductive Center is one of 379 member clinics that report to the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART). Of the 3.9 million babies born in 2012, 1.5 percent were conceived during an in vitro fertilization cycle.

IVF in 2012: By the Numbers

Reporting our IVF cycles to a third-party (SART) allows for big-picture assessments of where we are succeeding, and how we can improve as fertility specialists. The headlines from this year’s report (the most current to date):

“This is the largest number of cycles, of babies and percentage of babies born through IVF ever reported.”

• IVF clinics performed 165,172 cycles.
• IVF cycles resulted in 61,740 babies born.
• There were 2,000 more IVF babies born in 2012 than in 2011.

One Positive Trend in IVF: eSET

Conversations that Dr. Gehlbach regularly has with his IVF patients are reflected in the SART report. More and more couples and individuals are choosing to transfer fewer embryos in an IVF cycle. Known as elective single embryo transfer, or eSET, the practice eliminates the risk for multiple births without a significant decrease in the odds for successful conception.
